Sorare, a global Fantasy Football Game, has announced a raise of $4M in a seed round led by e.ventures, with Partech, Fabric Ventures, Semantic Ventures, World Cup Champion André Schürrle, and existing investors participating. With these fresh funds, the company will scale up its team as demand for their football gaming cards is booming thanks to a growing user base.
The popularity of physical football trading cards has been proven over the decades that they have been in existence. However, with the world transitioning into an increasingly digital era, Sorare have taken this long tradition of trading football cards and have digitized it. Their vision is to become the go-to game to increase the enjoyment of live football. They are realizing this goal by enabling users to play fantasy football with skin in the game, so they can truly own and trade their digital player cards.
The company has attracted the attention of major football clubs, with over 100 football clubs from Europe, the US and Asia partnering with the company, to issue officially licensed cards.
As the company grows, it hopes to recruit 10 engineers and game designers and also plans to finalize licensing partnerships with 5 leagues and 150 clubs by the end of the year.
Nicolas Julia, CEO at Sorare, explained: “We’re excited to continue accelerating the mission of Sorare, making fantasy football global and rewarding. We are creating the easiest way for football fans to leverage their football knowledge and play with skin in the game. We are delighted to be backed by an incredible syndicate of investors who will help us drive the adoption of fantasy football forward."
Boris Golden, Principal at Partech, added: “Backing a gaming company is typically not straightforward for early-stage VC. But Sorare is not a gaming studio, it’s a unique platform powering a game mixing two massive trends: fantasy soccer & digital collectibles. People love to play, challenge their friends, and win. But they also have an innate appetite for collecting goods and feeling good about it. Sorare has found the perfect mixture between the two, offering an outstanding gaming experience with real skin in the game, while engaging their players in the long run with the collection of cards they are building as they keep playing on the platform. This unique combination and the outstanding founding team really convinced us”.
